Pan-Pacific Association of Applied Linguistics 16(1), 83-109 Convergence and Divergence in the Interpretation of QuranicPolysemy and Lexical Recurrence1 Jamal alQinai Kuwait University alQinai, J. (2012). Convergence and divergence in the interpretation of Quranicpolysemy and lexical recurrence.Journal of Pan-Pacific Association of Applied Linguistics, 16(1), 83-109. The question of using synonyms in translating the Quran is a thorny issue that led to both different interpretations and different translations of the holy text. No matter how accurate or professional a translator attempts to be, Quranic translation has always been fraught with inaccuracies and the skewing of sensitive theological, cultural and historical connotations owing to the peculiar mechanism of stress, semantico-syntactic ambiguity, prosodic and acoustic features, the mesh of special rhetorical texture and culture-bound references. Consequently, in most of the English interpretations of the Quran, cases of non-equivalence and untranslatability will be more frequent with plenty of scope for ambiguities, obscurities and fuzzy boundaries. The trend has been to accept exegetical translation based on commentary and explanation of the Quranic discourse. Since there is no uniform book of exegesis, translations are considered to be glosses or approximates for non-Arabic speaking Muslims. This study is mainly concerned with assessing the criteria and strategies used by different Quran translators in selecting synonyms to render Quranicpolysemous words. The linguistic- cultural context of the original polysemous ST word will be analyzed and compared with its TT near-synonyms.The study argues that in translating religious texts where synonyms are usually used to convey implicated meanings of ST polysemous words and where we seek to have the same effect on the Target Language receiver as that of the original, the use of functional ideational equivalence is given primacy over formal equivalence. Key Words: interpretation, polysems, synonyms, recurrence, exegesis

Copyright Pietro Santoianni SUNLIGHTAND SKIN: NOT ONLY AGING Pietro Santoianni, Giacomo Riccio Department of Dermatology - University of Naples "Federico II" The skin has many endogenous chromophores that can absorb UV and visible radiation: nucleic acids, aromaticaminoacids (such as tyrosine, tryptophan, and histidine), peptide bonds and keratin, lipoproteins, melanin, heme derivates. Several exceedingly interesting data are now known on the biological effects of sunlight irradiation on human skin, concerning UVB, UVA and also visible light. UVA can be absorbed by several chromophores within the epidermis and dermis while for UVB the most important cromophores are in the epidermis: nucleic acids and proteins. Radiations from 350 to 1200 nm are absorbed by melanin, the main chromophore in the epidermis. UVA radiation, absorbed by skin chromophores essential for cell life such as NADH or flavin, causes oxidative stress leading to damage lipids, proteins and DNA and inducing alterations of many cell functions. Experimental evidence for UVA oxidative stress has been given: 1) lipid peroxidation is induced, and is more evident in normal human fibroblasts than in keratinocytes. 2) UVA lipid peroxidation in cultured human fibroblasts is dose related, and cell membranes damage is inhibited by vitamin E. 3) lipid peroxidation by UVB is 10 to 100 times more efficient than UVA (in contrast with the generally higher biological efficiency of UVA versus UVB). But, due to the greater amount of UVA in the sun radiation, UVA is equally or more effective in this respect than UVB, under the normal conditions of sun exposure. A significant protection of human fibroblasts against UVA peroxidation is played by glutathione and to a lesser degree by catalase, as UVA decreases the cellular content of catalase up to 85% and only glutathione to 15%. The extent of lipid peroxidation appears inversely correlated with SOD content. Low doses of UVA are able to decrease the release epidermal growth factor. UVA efficiently inhibits antigen presentation by Langerhans cells in allogenic situations. This effect is inhibited by Vitamin E. UV and longer wavelenghts of sunlight have a relevant effect on Langerhans cells and on urocanic acid in the epidermis, playing an intriguing role in skin immunomodulation and alterating normal skin immunoresponse.

Ultracold Alkali Atoms in Optical Lattices: A New Type of Quantum Crystals? Alexander E. Meyerovich Department of Physics, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI 02881, USA Similarities between alkali gases in optical lattices with non-integer occupa-tion of the lattice sites and quantum crystals are explored. The analogy withthe vacancy liquid provides an alternative explanation to the Mott transi-tion for the recent experiment on the phase transition in the lattice. Thevacancy liquid can undergo BEC with Tc within experimental reach. Directand vacancy-assisted mechanisms of the band motion for hyperÞne impuritiesare discussed. The presence of vacancies can result in the spatial decompo-sition of the system into pure hyperÞne components. Below BEC for thevacancies, the impurity component resembles 3He in 3He − HeII mixtures.PACS numbers: 03.75.Fi, 05.30.Jp, 66.35.+a, 67.80.-s.

How Does Psychotherapy Influence Personality?A Theoretical Integration John D. MayerUniversity of New Hampshire A given type of psychotherapy (e.g., psychodynamic) is associated with aset of specific change techniques (e.g., interpreting defenses, identifyingrelationship themes). Different change techniques can be conceived of asinfluencing different parts of personality (e.g., interpreting defense increasesconscious awareness). An integrated model of personality is presented. Then, change techniques from different theoretical perspectives are assignedby judges to areas of personality the techniques are believed to influence. The results suggest that specific change techniques can be reliably sortedinto the areas of personality. Thinking across theoretical perspectives leadsto important new opportunities for assessment, therapy outcome research, and communication with patients concerning personality change. ©2004Wiley Periodicals, Inc. However, new researchhas shown that medication is only mildly more effective than placebo in the treatment ofthese problems. In treating these conditions, neurofeedback (EEG biofeedback) may offer analternative to invasive treatments such as medication, ECT, and intense levels of transcrancialmagnetic stimulation. This paper reviews the neurofeedback literature with these problems, finding particularly positive research support for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Newfindings on the neurofeedback treatment of depression are presented.
